ADAMS AND FAYAL KINDERGARTENS
Adams Kindergarten:
Lincoln Avenue, west of Northside Park | Built: 1904 |
Fayal Kindergarten:
NW corner of Fayal Road and Auburn Avenue | Built: 1904 |
After the Eveleth School District was formed in 1903, the Board arranged for two kindergarten buildings to alleviate "deplorably overcrowded" conditions at the Fayal and Spruce schools. The Board awarded the building contract to Martin Finucan (also spelled Finnucan), who began construction in February 1904. The wooden schoolhouses were supposed to be temporary, but the Adams Kindergarten was later enlarged, and both buildings remained in use until the 1920s. Enrollment at the Adams was 75 in 1907 and 83 in 1918.
In the fall of 1908, the manual training department was relocated from the basement of the Fayal School to the Fayal Kindergarten, where it remained until the new high school was completed a year later. The Range Kindergarten Association met at the Fayal Kindergarten on March 8, 1919. Although the buildings were called kindergartens, the classrooms were used for other grades as enrollment required. They were heated with wood stoves and likely did not have indoor plumbing. Completion of Benjamin Franklin School, which opened in 1923, was a more modern building and created much more room for grade school children. The Fayal Kindergarten closed in 1923; the Adams, in 1926. Both buildings were demolished at some point, and houses now occupy those lots.
