Historical Marker at the Site of Eveleth's First Building
The Eveleth Heritage Society celebrated the city's 125th anniversary by dedicating a plaque at the site of Eveleth's first building, a log cabin erected in 1892. Eveleth was not platted as a village until April 1893, but tradition holds that Eveleth was founded in 1892 because the first mining camp was established that year. This plaque, dedicated to the memory of Eveleth's pioneers, is mounted on monument created by Joseph Bogdanich for the city's 75th anniversary in 1967.
Although a sign once explained the cabin's significance, the historic site had been without interpretation for quite some time. The Eveleth Heritage Society decided that the best way to celebrate 125 years of Eveleth was with a historical marker at the place where it all started. We ordered an 18" by 24" aluminum plaque through Silver Creek Signworks of Two Harbors. The inscription gives a short history of the cabin and the monument, along with a quotation from J. H. Hearding. A photo of the cabin etched in stainless steel is in the center.
Despite blustery conditions outside, a sizeable crowd gathered to see the plaque revealed at a short ceremony October 30, 2017. Heritage Society President Aho and Eveleth Mayor Robert Vlaisavljevich shared some remarks about the history of the site and the importance of preserving Eveleth history, and the Heritage Society's souvenir blanket was pulled away to unveil the new historical marker. After the ceremony, the Heritage Society hosted coffee an' at the Eveleth Auditorium where more photos and history of the cabin were displayed.
The monument is located southwest of the main Northside Park near the intersection of Park Place and Douglas Avenue. The sign is anchored to the boulder's south side. Eveleth's first building is also a stop on the society's walking tour called "Captains' Homes and Immigrant Halls."
